Written on the back of the image: "When the U.M.W of A organized in 1907 in Rock Springs. These miners were the first miners to sign up. The picture was given to Annie in 1950 from an old album of her mother's. The 5th man from the left is John Lewis (Papa) & the sixth is Uncle August, the rest are unknown! John & August were working in No. 9 Mine at the time No. 9 was on the other side of the interstate (I-80) on the east end of Rock Springs! The U.M.W. of A organized in Rock Springs Sept. 1, 1907! John was one of the first men to sign up that day!" Nine men in miner's clothes are standing with men in suits and a couple children. According to the back the nine men signed up for the union. |
